First Sunday in Lent
What is lent?
Lent is 40-day the period preceding Easter that in the Christian Church is devoted to fasting, abstinence, self-examination and penitence in commemoration of Jesus’ fasting in the wilderness. In the Western Church, it runs from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday. Sundays are not counted in the 40 days because Sundays are not fasting days, they are feasting days.
Collect (Special Prayer)
Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin:
give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit;
and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen
We would like to collect money to sort out our heating problems in the church. The plan is to start by double glazing our windows. If you are able to contribute, please put your donations in an envelope marked HEATING FUND and put it in the collection on a Sunday morning our give it directly to a Church Warden.
Please be Vigilant and alert during and after the service. If someone comes in, be discerning about their behaviour and demeanour and act accordingly – call attention to someone who may look or behave threateningly or suspiciously.
